During 2003–2006, DNR conducted an inventory of old growth forest on DNR lands in Maryland and identified 2,176 acres of old growth forest distributed among 40 sites, with somewhat over half being located in state forests in Western Maryland. Two of the largest areas are located in the Savage River State Forest (Jolly, p.6.) DNR has promised to develop plans to manage, protect, and augment these areas by controlling invasives, conducting prescribed burns where appropriate, and by protecting areas that have potential to eventually connect the fragments (Jolly, p.7).
