RECENT POLL FINDS THE MAJORITY OF NEW HAMPSHIRE PRIMARY VOTERS OPPOSE PRESIDENT CLINTON'S FOREST MANAGEMENT PROPOSAL

According to a recent poll commissioned by Save America's Forests, a large majority of New Hampshire primary voters oppose President Clinton's forest management proposal because it allows clearcutting in the national forests and logging of ancient forests. The poll, conducted by Abacus Associates, found that a majority of residents who are likely to vote in the New Hampshire primary elections in February 2000 oppose clearcutting in the national forests and logging of ancient forests.

Carl Ross, director of Save America's Forests says, "An even larger number of voters would like to see a law passed in Congress that prohibits clearcutting in the national forests and prevents logging in the ancient forests." Below are the results from interviews conducted from January 8 to January 11, 2000, with a representative sample of likely primary voters in New Hampshire.

*AGAINST CLEARCUTTING -- 75% of Democratic voters and 70% of Republican voters oppose clearcutting.

*NO LOGGING OF ANCIENT FORESTS -- 86% of Democratic voters and 75% of Republican voters favor protecting ancient forests from logging.

*NEW HAMPSHIRE'S NATIONAL FOREST -- Over three-quarters of New Hampshire primary voters (78% of Republican voters and 78% of Democratic voters) oppose clearcutting in New Hampshire's White Mountain National Forest.

*CLINTON'S NATIONAL FOREST PLAN -- A majority of voters in both primaries oppose Clinton's plan because it allows clearcutting in the national forests and logging of ancient forests. 77% percent of Republican primary voters and 70% of Democratic primary voters oppose Clinton's plan.
