SB 754 Perata - Heritage Tree Preservation Act
Dear Assemblymember:
I strongly urge you to vote 'YES' on SB 754, The Heritage Tree Preservation
Act.
Bill author Senator Perata and the proponents of SB754 continue to work
diligently with small landowners, members of the timber industry as well
as environmental organizations, real estate groups and developers to craft
a bill that will protect the largest and oldest of California's most beloved
trees in a cost-effective, and efficient manner.
While in the Senate, several amendments have been made to the bill to
protect these ancient treasures and to eliminate unintended effects on
private property. Significant changes have been made to reduce costs and
to ensure that there is minimal burden upon the State. There are even
penalty provisions written into the bill to recoup and offset its costs.
The Heritage Trees protected under this act represent less than one-half
of one percent of trees standing on California's non-federal forestlands.
These trees, standing since before statehood, are an historic legacy,
passed into our care from the California Republic, Mexican, Spanish, and
Native American eras, respectively. It is the moral imperative of this
legislature to protect these trees now, before we pay the ultimate cost,
and lose them forever.
We urge you to pass this important measure to protect California's heritage,
before it is lost forever. Thank you for your consideration of this matter
and thank you for voting for SB 754, the Heritage Tree Preservation Act.
