SAMPLE LETTER #1
March 5, 2002
Dear Editor,
Most people are shocked to learn that it is still legal to cut down a 1,000 year-old tree.
Four years ago Gov. Gray Davis made a campaign promise to ensure "that rivers are clean, wetlands are preserved, and all old-growth trees are spared from the lumberjack's ax." It is indeed unfortunate that he has not kept this important, unequivocal promise. Old-growth trees, some over 16 feet in diameter, are still falling to chainsaws and greed everyday.
The Campaign for Old Growth (CFOG) is working to qualify a ballot initiative that will protect all heritage trees alive the year California became a state (1850). Together we can save this last 3% of California's virgin forests.
We can protect these irreplaceable and unique ecosystems for future generations, if we act immediately. Call (213) 484-4474 or check out www.ancienttrees.org and get active!
Sincerely,
Greta Garbo
